renovated bathroom with white walls, countertops, and shower tiles

6 Bathroom Remodeling Trends & Ideas for the DMV

Are you ready to revamp your bathroom? A strategic remodel can totally transform one of the most-used rooms in your home, taking it from a merely functional space to a relaxing personal sanctuary.

As with any room in your home, bathroom remodeling trends are ever-evolving, blending modern ideas with timeless designs. If you’re unsure where to begin, consider the following popular bathroom styles in DC to inspire your renovation project.

Ready to transform your bathroom? Contact Jordan Design-Build Group at (571) 409-1633 to get started.

Marble Bathroom Ideas

Marble is synonymous with luxury and elegance. Whether you prefer intricately veined marble or more subtle variations, this material can elevate your bathroom’s aesthetic appeal. Incorporate marble into your bathroom floors, walls, accents, and countertops to create a lavish feel. Marble comes in countless formats from traditional mosaics to bold water-jet patterns. If you love the look of marble, but not the cost or maintenance, marble-look porcelain tiles are a great option. They pair seamlessly with real marble accents and no one will be the wiser.

Brass Bathroom Trends

Brass is experiencing a popular resurgence in DC bathroom design. While this metal has been around for ages, it’s available in a wide variety of finishes to suit any design style. Its most current incarnation includes a brushed or satin finish, which has a softer more modern feel, while highly polished brass may be better suited for traditional design aesthetics. Embrace brass in your plumbing fixtures, accessories, mirrors, and cabinet hardware. Brass fixtures complement a variety of finishes and stand out with stunning contrast against dark and light hues alike.

Bathroom Storage Designs

Bathroom storage space is a must-have consideration for any bath remodel we tackle in the DMV. Whether your bathroom is expansive or small, there’s always a way to get creative with storing linens, toiletries, and necessities close at hand. Furniture-style vanities have gained popularity, and they can provide ample storage with cabinets, drawers, or a combination of both. If possible, we provide convenience outlets in cabinetry for charging razors and toothbrushes to help keep countertops clutter-free. For tighter spaces, decorative baskets, strategically placed rob hooks, and hotel-style towel racks can provide additional storage.

Spa-Like Bathroom Ideas

In the hustle and bustle In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, creating a home sanctuary is crucial for helping you unwind. Drawing inspiration from boutique hotels or luxury spas, we can help transform your bathroom into a haven right in your home. Deep soaking tubs are a must-have in any spa-like retreat — these can be incorporated into any size bathroom from a small guest room alcove tub to a larger freestanding tub in an expansive primary bathroom. Consider having multiple showering options installed, including standard shower heads, multi-function handhelds, and overhead rain showers to add variety to your bathing experience. Soothing neutral colors, monochromatic schemes, and natural elements can evoke a spa-like atmosphere.

Spa-Like Master Bathroom Renovation in Northern VA, MD, DC. river rocks, wood, cadiz shell, glass enclosed shower, integrated seating and a deep soaking tub complete the spa-like atmosphere.

Graphic Bathroom Tiles

Using bold graphic floor tiles in a powder room, guest bath, or kids’ bathroom, can add a huge impact to a small space. These tiles can range from a modern aesthetic to a more vintage feel and the remaining fixtures and finishes in the room will complete the design. We recommend letting the bold tiles shine and keeping the other finishes in the room more restrained. Simple Shaker or slab door vanities are a nice complement. As an alternative in powder rooms, you can add a bold patterned wall covering or a striking wall color to create a wow factor your guests won’t soon forget.

Charming Vintage Bathrooms

Vintage never goes out of style. Incorporating elements like clawfoot tubs, traditional faucet styles, hexagon floor tiles, and vintage subway tile can infuse a sense of nostalgia into your bathroom. The idea is to blend the old with the new without sacrificing modern-day comforts for a cozy, soothing space that exudes timeless elegance.

How to Navigate a Home Renovation During a Global Pandemic

Home Remodeling Supply Chain Pain!

If you’ve noticed empty shelves and rising prices lately, whether it’s at your local hardware shop, grocery store, or big-box retailer, you are not alone. One of the most widely felt repercussions of the global COVID-19 pandemic has been the disruption of long-established supply chains. Production slow-downs, logistics, and transportation challenges, as well as the limited availability of parts and raw materials, have resulted in major constraints across many industries, but the construction sector seems especially hard hit. Home remodeling has been impacted by building product shortages, from framing lumber to flooring, plumbing fixtures to lighting. Long lead times for appliances, cabinetry, and even paint can create challenges for even the smallest home renovation project.

So, what does this all mean for you, the homeowner, as you consider that long-dreamed-of kitchen, bathroom, or whole house renovation? As a design+build firm, we’ve learned that it’s all about getting a handle on the evolving marketplace, understanding the potential impacts on timeline and budget, and planning, planning, planning!

5 TIPS FOR YOU:

We’ve come up with a few tips to best prepare for a renovation in these uncertain times. An experienced design+build team can assist and guide you through the process.

  • Plan Early – Give yourself as much time as possible to figure out the details and elements that will go into your remodel. The more time you have, the better the odds of you getting everything you want out of your budget and project vision.
  • Set Reasonable Expectations – Expect the unexpected.  Supply chain issues are constantly evolving and will probably cause some type of hiccup with your master plan. Be prepared to pivot and be flexible with your selections.
  • Have a Plan B (& C!) – We all want our first choice for a countertop or cabinet but having your alternatives pre-selected will ensure you get the most desirable outcome in case of any supply chain issues.
  • Don’t get rid of your current appliances (yet)! – With delivery times suddenly being pushed back at random, it may be wise to hold on to the appliances you have until you receive the new ones.
  • Breathe!  – Hire an experienced design+build team that knows how to navigate through today’s supply chain challenges so you can sit back and enjoy the process. At JDBG, we have the creativity, knowledge, and experience to provide exceptional remodeling no matter what the current environment holds.

On a recent project, JDBG worked with a local custom cabinet maker who was able to provide a quicker turn-around than any of our regular cabinet suppliers.

Historic Woodley Park Stone Mansion Full House Renovation

Historic Woodley Park Stone Mansion Gets Extensive Renovation

An old stone mansion built in 1924 had seen a number of renovations over the decades, and the time had finally come to address a growing list of issues in this striking Woodley Park residence. Rather than continue with a patchwork of fixes, the owners engaged our team at Jordan Design-Build Group to conduct a full-house renovation to bring this home back to its former glory and in line with its status as an international consulate residence where dignitaries are hosted on a regular basis.

One of the highest priorities was updating the main floor’s more public spaces, consisting of the grand hallway, living room, and dining room, which serve as the primary representation areas where special events are hosted regularly.

To learn more about the renovation of this historic residence or to get started with our design-build services, contact Jordan Design-Build Group online or call us at (571) 409-1633.

Historic Residence Renovations

Great attention to detail was given to the selection, customization, and installation of new drapes, carpets, and runners – all of which had to complement the home’s existing antique furniture. The striking red runner gives new life to the grand hall and winding staircase and makes quite an impression upon entering the property.

The original oak hardwood floors were sanded, repaired, and refinished with an Early American stain. New ceilings, moldings, medallions, chandeliers, and paint elevate the spaces to their fullest potential. A custom bar was added to an adjacent sunroom that serves as spillover space for formal events and a more intimate setting for casual gatherings.

One of the biggest undertakings was remodeling the expansive 365-square-foot kitchen; the main kitchen needed to be both a workhorse for the weekly catered events as well as serve as the residents’ primary hub. We made adjustments to the layout both to maximize countertop and storage space and to enhance overall functionality, being mindful of the dual purposes this kitchen serves.

Redesigning a Historic Home

To add visual interest, we used two-toned cabinets – classic white along the perimeter to keep the space feeling bright and a deep blue to distinguish the two islands and tall pantry. Brushed brass accents echo the original brass hardware and fixtures throughout the home. A kitchen this large needed a statement when it came to the countertops, so we selected a stunning Nuvolato quartzite with distinctive veining that complements the blue cabinets.

The original Heart Pine floors in the kitchen were refinished to let the natural character of the wood shine through. A custom antique Heart Pine wood top was commissioned for the fixed island – the warmth of wood was preferable to stone for the informal seating area. The second mobile island serves as both prep area and staging space for dinners and events.

Renovating a Historic Home’s Bathroom

All of the home’s bathrooms needed to be fully gutted and completely redone. In the master bathroom, we took this opportunity to rearrange the layout to incorporate a double vanity and relocate the toilet (the former bathroom had only a small single vanity with the toilet awkwardly located directly in front of the door).

The bathtub was replaced with a generous walk-in shower complete with frameless glass and digital controls. A beautiful Calacatta and Bardiglio Gray basketweave tile was used in combination with various sizes of Calacatta marble field tile and trim for a look that is both elegant and timeless.

Woodley Park Mansion Dressing Room Renovations

In the adjacent dressing room, we installed new cabinetry that can be easily reconfigured for a variety of clothing storage needs. New pinch pleat drapes add a touch of formality and sophistication to the room and the matching cushioned bench provides the perfect perch to put on shoes or just relax after a long evening of entertaining guests.

One of the most immediate challenges we faced was addressing a particularly problematic bathroom located in a guest wing of the house. The steeply pitched ceilings made showering nearly impossible and it was difficult to move around the miniscule bathroom without bumping your head. Our solution was to relocate the bathroom to an adjacent sitting room that had 8’ ceilings and was flooded with natural light. At twice the size of the old bathroom, the new location had ample space to create a true second master bathroom complete with soaking tub, walk-in shower, and 5’ vanity.

Historic Home Renovation: Woodley Park Mansion

Our largest project to date, this historic whole-house remodel was an exceptionally rewarding experience and we couldn’t have done it alone. We are thankful to have an incredible team and a network of trusted vendors and subs that each did their part to help us turn this historic stone mansion into a thing of beauty.

Virtual Design Capabilities

Over the past several months, our lives have had to adjust to a new way of doing things, finding ways to remain creative, positive, and productive throughout the COVID-19 crisis. With social distancing guidelines in place across the DC area, it was important for us to find a way to provide our design-build services without surrendering the safety and peace of mind of our clients.

Virtual Design Meetings That Fit Easily Into Your Schedule

At Jordan Design-Build Group, our team is still hard at work and helping our clients build the kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, and whole-house remodels of their dreams. We have seamlessly shifted the bulk of our design process into a virtual environment and the majority of our client meetings are now conducted using web and cloud-based software. In fact, our 3D design capabilities and virtual meetings have helped streamline the design process, allowing us to regularly meet with our clients so that all of the critical decisions can be made in a timely fashion.

Virtual Design Capabilities That Show Your Home’s Potential

Today’s technology makes it easy for us to host virtual meetings, but beyond that we are able to create and share realistic architectural renderings with our clients so they can visualize how their remodeled spaces will look. Even before the pandemic, our design team was using advanced architectural design software to create 3D models and renderings, produce plans and elevations, and turn those into detailed construction documents. In addition, we employ a combination of mood boards, inspiration images, finish palettes, and other visual media to refine all the project details and develop a comprehensive design package that reflects our client’s renovation goals. Simply put, we have advanced our virtual design capabilities to a fine art.

Below you can read the story behind a recent virtual design project and see examples of the upcoming home transformation:

Redesigning a Home for a Remote Client

After growing up in Northern Virginia, our client settled out west to raise a family. Once the kids were all off to college, she and her husband decided to relocate back to the DC area to be closer to extended family. In anticipation, they decided to purchase and renovate a home prior to moving back.

While the house was in decent shape overall, the kitchen and bathroom needed significant updates, so JDBG was engaged to provide design-build services and we were up for the task!

When looking for a design-build company, our client was impressed with our 3D design capabilities and appreciated our willingness to meet with them virtually. Although in-person meetings are always valuable, a lot can be accomplished remotely. Our advanced architectural design software allows the JDBG design team to realistically convey the new spaces with ease.

Springfield Kitchen – Virtual Walkthrough

Standard architectural plans can only go so far in communicating how a space might look once completed. Employing advanced residential modeling software, JDBG’s design team can provide countless ways to realistically convey how the renovated space will look and feel. From birds-eye views to 360° panoramas, from multiple perspectives to virtual “walk-thrus” we can do it all! As the renderings above and walk-thru below illustrate, reconfiguring the kitchen layout, extending the cabinets to the ceiling and modernizing all the finishes will totally transform the space.

Springfield Bathrooms – Virtual Designs

The home’s original bathroom had an odd Jack-and-Jill layout with two toilets, two vanities and a single bathtub shared between 3 bedrooms. Since it was the only bathroom on the main floor it also served as the de facto powder room for guests.

With some creative modifications to existing walls and the removal of a small linen closet, we were able to divide the space into two functional and totally separate bathrooms (one of them now a true en suite master). A birds-eye view of the bathrooms was helpful in illustrating the layout changes to our client. It also realistically depicts what the proposed finish selections will look like.

During the design phase we use a combination of 3D renderings, finish boards and image portfolios to convey how different selections influence the overall design of the space – our clients’ final finish selections are depicted below.

Kitchen remodel in Northern VA, MD, DC; white cabinets; stainless steel appliances; colorful tile; eclectic style

JDBG 10th Anniversary: Designs of the Decade Part 1

To celebrate the final month of our 10 year anniversary, the JDBG team got together to reflect on some of the most memorable projects of the past decade.  Each of these remodeling projects represents a special moment or milestone during our time in business.  We thought it would only be fitting to count down to the next decade by telling the story behind each one! Part 1: #s 10-6.

#10: A Humble Home in Falls Church

Kitchen remodel in Northern Virginia, white cabinets, stainless steel appliances, tile backsplash, island, french doors

Our first project in the countdown goes to a memorable addition/remodel from the early days in 2013! In a neighborhood of teardowns in Falls Church, this couple wanted their home to be distinct for being true to who they are.  They appreciated that we didn’t try to oversell them and the final result is a classic & cozy home design that’s perfect in size and function for two dedicated high school teachers.  Seven years later, we were invited back to transform the remaining untouched bathroom and the couple was thrilled to see the same crew from the original job! This is a remodel & relationship we’re proud that has stood the test of time. See the entire kitchen and bath remodel here!

#9: Three D.C. Bathrooms

If you’ve spent time in Northwest D.C., there’s no doubt you’ve stepped into one of its iconic Wardman-style row houses. While charming on the outside, many of them have awkward layouts or lack the amenities expected for today’s modern lifestyle. For this Glover Park project, what started as a 4BR/1BA home was converted into a 3BR/3BA with a fully finished in-law suite in the basement. This creative couple also challenged us to match their eclectic spirit, asking that each of the bathrooms have their own distinct style: one spa-like, one vintage, and one modern.  We met that challenge and more — converting an extra bedroom into a spacious 5-piece master bathroom, this couple no longer has to share a cramped hall bathroom and can luxuriate in their urban oasis!

#8: High Standards & Stakes in Oakton

Kitchen remodeling in Northern VA, MD, DC, white cabinets, marble counters, island, stainless steel appliances

In 2014 we took on one of our largest, most transformative kitchen remodels and, one year later, our clients invited us back for a luxurious master suite renovation. For any project, but particularly ones of this scale, our tried-and-true formula for success is simple: thoughtful design and meticulous execution. Both the master suite and kitchen were completely customized to exacting standards. The end result is a bright, tailored, and timeless home that will be the centerpiece of our portfolio for decades to come. See the rest of the project here!

#7: His & Her Bathrooms in Woodley Park

Another Northwest D.C. row house project! These classic homes can have their fair share of design challenges, but when you start with good bones, great design follows (hello soaring skylights). In this case, two separate  bathrooms were greater than one with each space reflecting very distinct styles: his more masculine and grounded, hers more feminine and glamorous. See the whole project.

#6: A Modern Farmhouse in Maryland

Some of our most memorable projects are all the more so because of the client themselves. Not only did our client for this project have a vision, she was the vision! To match the eclectic energy of the homeowner, we installed a colorful cement tile backsplash, a pressed tin ceiling and distinctive black trim. This bold makeover suits the uniqueness of the home and its owner perfectly! See the whole project here.

JDBG 10th Anniversary: Designs of the Decade Part 2

To celebrate the final month of our 10 year anniversary, the JDBG team got together to reflect on some of the most memorable projects of the past decade. Each of these remodeling projects represents a special moment or milestone during our time in business. We thought it would only be fitting to count down to the next decade by telling the story behind each one! Part 2: #s 5-1.

#5: Finding the Answer in Arlington

A subtle favorite from our portfolio! As a home remodeler, helping people is really at the core of why we do what we do. If our work can help someone live more comfortably, and live happier, then what we do is a success. Sometimes a client finds us after they’ve been told by others that what they want to do isn’t possible. This kitchen remodel is one of those times. Working with a tight budget in a small space, we were able to make a huge impact and give this client a brand new kitchen and then some! We opened up the space to the living area and transformed this area of the home with a cohesive and cozy design. See the whole project.

#4: Doubling Up While Keeping the Budget Down

Behind every successful remodel is a thoughtful design that reimagines what a home can be! It is the personalized playbook for each remodel that helps us turn a client’s dream into reality. For this Cape Cod remodel, we reconfigured what had been the home’s only full bathroom and turned it into an en-suite with vintage flair.  Then we converted a small foyer at the top of the stairs into a second ¾ guest bath with a modern take on vintage. By working within the home’s existing footprint (and avoiding a costly addition), it was a win-win for the homeowner. See both bathrooms.

#3: A 3D Forecast of the Future

Making a decision on the final design is always the toughest part of a remodel. To get through this step, we’ve found seeing is believing for our clients. While floor plans are our usual starting point, we took this project to the next level by creating a complete 360 rendering of the proposed design. This allowed our client to be immersed in their future kitchen and “walk through” it months before it’s completion! It’s been a staple of our process ever since, and an essential tool for any project of ours going in to 2020! See the whole project.

#2: Collaboration is Key for a Major Project in D.C.!

Woodland Kitchen Remodeled

For our biggest project on record, it was all hands on deck for the JDBG team, but we knew we couldn’t take on this massive whole home renovation all on our own! Over the past 10 years, we’ve been fortunate enough to build a network of trusted vendors and subs that each do their part in turning our client’s dreams into reality. For this undertaking, it took over 15 in total, and some of the very best in the business to make it happen. Like anything in business, if you find something good you stick with it! It’s no surprise that we’ve been working with some of these folks from the very beginning! See the whole project.

#1: A Dream Come True in Centreville, VA

A before image of Doyle Lane kitchen
Doyle Lane Kitchen Renovation with white countertops

Collaboration is at the heart of who we are at JDBG so we love it when a client wants to put their distinct design stamp on a renovation. This client had been dreaming about their new kitchen for over 17 years, so the pressure was on to find a way to combine two different style sensibilities – modern rustic and “Granny Chic”. We worked side-by-side with her to capture the essence of her vision and personality and made sure it blended with her family’s lifestyle as well. It seems fitting that our final project of the decade combines both modern and nostalgic elements, and we look forward to more incredible collaborations as we move into 2020. See the whole new project now!

Questions You Should Ask Your Remodeler Before Hiring

Home renovations can be a big investment so before engaging a contractor or design-build firm, it would be wise to ask a few key questions to be sure you’re hiring a professional, qualified team. In this week’s blog, we’ve put together a list of some of the top questions you should be asking your remodeler.

Before and After kitchen space remodeled

Are you licensed to operate in this state?

This is the first thing you should ask anyone who is offering to work on your home. While it may seem simple enough, many homeowners often either forget to ask this question or overlook it due to a quote that seems too good to be true (hint: it probably is). For an investment as important as this one, there is a certain standard of work and care your contractor should be held accountable to – so take the time to ask or look up if your contractor is licensed; verify what type of license they hold and if it is currently valid. You will be protecting your home and your pocket book in the long run.  Jordan Design-Build Group is fully licensed and insured in Virginia, DC and Maryland.

A remodeler checklist listed valid license in VA, DC & MD, fully insured and workers' compensation

Have you worked in this city/county before? What is the permit process for a project like mine?

Adding to the point above, a contractor’s geographic service area can make a big difference in setting the right expectations and timeline for your project. Look for someone who is not only a specialist in the area of the home you’re seeking to remodel, but someone who is also familiar with the specific permitting and inspection processes related to your project. Hiring someone who is knowledgeable about jurisdictional building requirements is going to save you time and money in the long run. If a contractor struggles to articulate their experience in this regard, you might be better served looking elsewhere.

Fairfax County, Virginia Building Permit document

How long have you been in business and can you provide references?

While years of experience do not necessarily guarantee that a contractor is going to deliver on their promises, their references from past clients will be able to give you a fairly accurate depiction of the quality of work and level of service you should expect. If a contractor has 10 years of happy customers, it’s a good sign that they provide excellent workmanship and stellar customer service. Jordan Design-Build Group is proud to have developed that kind of relationship and reputation with our clients in Northern Virginia and the DC area since 2009.

Jordan Design-Build Group's logo in blue text and 10th group anniversary in brown text

How long will this project take and when can we get started?

Your remodeling contractor should be able to give you a general time-frame for how long your type of project will take and when you can get started based on their current log of clients. Ask to see a typical construction schedule for a similar type job. At JDBG we provide detailed construction schedules for every project no matter the size and keep our clients regularly updated. You should also take into consideration that the design portion of your project can take anywhere from several weeks to several months depending on the scope of your remodel (are you renovating a small hall bathroom or doing a whole house remodel?). At Jordan Design-Build Group, we go through a detailed design process so that all selections, construction documentation and pricing are finalized before we ever lift a hammer so that our projects stay on schedule and on budget.

Who will be working on this project?

It’s important to know who you’ll be working with on your remodeling project. Are the people you’re meeting with for the initial consultation the actual team that you’ll be working with throughout the process? Embarking on a home renovation can be a challenging process so you’ll want a remodeling team that is knowledgeable, experienced, communicative and reliable. Open communication and a high level of trust will lead to a successful project so it’s critical that you find a team that inspires confidence and one that you’ll enjoy working with over the course of your project. At Jordan Design-Build Group our team is made up of both experienced design professionals, project managers and skilled field personnel and we work together to see your project through from conception through completion.

Get The Most Out Of Your Kitchen Renovation With These Tried And True Pro Tips

Welcome to our new series on home remodeling tips! For over 10 years, we’ve been working with clients in the greater Washington, D.C.  Metro area to achieve their dream homes, kitchens and bathrooms. In that time, we have learned a great deal and hope to pass on some tried and true design and remodeling tips so that you might get the most out of the investment you’re making in your home.

Up first, we have three of our favorite tips for kitchen renovations, featuring stunning transformations in Oakton, Manassas, and Washington D.C.

Pro Tip #1. Use a layered approach to lighting

Kitchens are the heart of every home! A layered lighting approach creates depth and dimension within a space; lighting should not only enhance the style of your kitchen, but also provide flexibility and functionality.

In the kitchen renovation pictured below, we ticked all the boxes of good lighting by providing recessed lights in the ceiling (ambient lighting), decorative pendants over the island (accent lighting), under cabinet lights (task lighting) and display lights in select cabinets (more accent lighting). With the addition of dimmers, the lighting can be fully customized to suit any occasion, whether you want to create a relaxed atmosphere for sharing cocktails with friends or brighten things up for a chef at work!

Pro Tip #2. Take advantage of ceiling height

On any given project, we always try to find creative ways to maximize space. It was common practice in older kitchens to float wall cabinets rather than take them all the way to the ceiling. In kitchens with tall ceilings, we recommend stacking cabinets as the perfect solution to take back underutilized wall space and create a classic tailored appearance. In kitchens with more standard height ceilings, we suggest replacing floating cabinets with taller cabinets to add storage and create a more custom look. In the two examples below, the end result in both kitchens is a more updated and polished look that the homeowners love.

Pro Tip #3. Do a thorough kitchen inventory before you begin

We recommend doing a thorough kitchen inventory before you start planning your renovation. Think about where and how you want to store things and plan accordingly. To help with this process, we provide clients with a detailed inventory spreadsheet. We also take photos of the contents of every drawer and cabinet, what’s on the countertop and in the pantry. We want everything to have a home in the newly remodeled kitchen.  Careful planning at the beginning of a project will ensure a more successful renovation in the end.

In this project from Capitol Hill in D.C., our client wanted to get items off the countertop for a less cluttered, more streamlined look. We created extra storage by taking uppers to the ceiling and adding cabinetry to a formerly blank wall; the reduced depth of the base cabinets on the right keeps the kitchen feeling open while still providing ample storage and more counter space!

At JDBG finding the perfect balance of function and design is at the core of our home remodeling philosophy. Our comprehensive design-build approach ensures that the process is as seamless as possible and we take care of every step along the way. Before you sign on the dotted line, this may be something you want to ask of your home remodeler as well!

Is a Kitchen Island Right for You?

When remodeling your kitchen, you have lots of decisions to make, from cabinetry colors to hardware styles, but one of the biggest decisions you may face is whether or not to install an island in your kitchen. There are both advantages and disadvantages to choosing a kitchen island, which are further explained below.

The Pros of Kitchen Islands

Kitchen islands are a popular option to enhance and utilize the space in a home. If your kitchen has the space for an island, there can be many benefits to installing one. The advantages of kitchen islands include:

  • Add room for preparation – take advantage of extra counterspace to allow for use of countertop appliances, groceries, and more.
  • Make room for seating – add bar stools along a kitchen island for additional seats, and socialize with others while meal prep happens.
  • Create a multi-purpose surface – create a great place for accomplishing homework, reading the paper in the morning, and accomplishing other tasks in the heart of your home.
  • Allow for extra storage – islands are great opportunities to add extra cabinets and storage options customized to meet your needs.
  • Increase home value – many homebuyers look for homes with islands and they often show a good return on investment in the sales process.

The Cons of Kitchen Islands

If you’re tight on kitchen space as is, it’s possible that installing an island in your kitchen might only make your space more difficult to navigate. There are some disadvantages to kitchen islands, including:

  • Limits space – adding an island takes up quite a bit of floor space that could be utilized in many different ways.
  • Disrupts traffic flow – gone is the flexibility of an open kitchen; instead, a kitchen island can complicate navigation patterns in your home.
  • Adds to remodeling costs – kitchen islands are custom-built with cabinetry and countertops, so they do add to the cost of a remodeling project.

Remodeling Before and After: Kitchen and Bathroom Makeover in Arlington, VA

Sometimes your space may not need a top to bottom overhaul, but how do you weigh the available options? Do you need to completely change the layout of your kitchen or just refresh your cabinets and backsplash? Could simple cosmetic changes make your powder room look and feel brand new?  One of our remodeling clients in the Arlington, Virginia area was facing a similar dilemma, and we helped them navigate the design process to tailor their kitchen and powder room perfectly to their style.

Keep reading to learn how this kitchen and bathroom makeover progressed, and watch the video below to see before and after photos!

Part 1: The Kitchen Makeover

The traditional elements in this client’s former kitchen, including antiqued cabinets, ornate trim and a travertine backsplash, didn’t fit well with the tailored style of the rest of the house. We proposed three renovation options ranging from least expensive to most expensive:

  1. Re-paint the existing cabinets and trim, and replace the backsplash
  2. Replace the cabinet doors, drawers and trim with a more updated style and paint color, and replace the backsplash
  3. Redesign or remodel the entire kitchen

Since the bones of the existing kitchen—meaning the layout, cabinet boxes, hardware, and countertops—were in great shape, the client decided to go with the second option. With updated kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts, new crown molding, a fresh coat of white paint, a herringbone backsplash and upgraded lighting, we gave this kitchen a new life at a fraction of the cost of starting over from scratch. The client’s only regret was not doing this five years ago!

“We love the kitchen and powder room. We had our dinner party on Saturday and our guests were wowed! It just makes everything happier in that room. And we spend a LOT of time in the kitchen area so it’s been a phenomenal shift in attitude in there. I wish we did that 5 years ago!” – Lynn W.

Part 2: The Bathroom Makeover

The nearby powder room was also in need of a facelift. The client selected a bold navy and white trellis wallcovering but was concerned it might be too “busy” for such a small space. By carrying bead board around the room on the lower half of the wall, the powder room feels balanced rather than busy. The new vanity light and mirror in a soft brass tone add the finishing touches.
