2 New Bathrooms & Main Floor Modifications

Our clients came to us with two renovation priorities for their 1950’s Cape Cod style house renovation – add a new ensuite bathroom upstairs and open up their cramped entryway on the main level. The owners also mentioned that they hoped to tackle the dated hall bathroom in the near future so we took this into consideration during the design phase to come up with a new layout that would tick several boxes.

By relocating the hall bath, we were able to create a large ensuite bathroom with a generous shower and double vanity with plenty of space left over for a separate walk-in closet. We paired the classic look of marble with matte black fixtures to add a sophisticated, modern edge. The natural wood tones of the vanity and teak bench bring warmth to the space. A frosted glass pocket door to the walk-through closet provides privacy, but still allows light through.

In the new hall bathroom, we used a marble-look hex tile on the floor; the porcelain is durable and easy to maintain and the Calacatta look provides visual continuity with the ensuite bath. Elongated white subway tile keeps the bathroom feeling light and bright and a deep soaking tub means a relaxing spa-like bath is an option when needed. An open hall cubby space is currently used as the kids’ book nook, but could easily house linens and overflow bath supplies.

On the main level, the front entry was a constant bottleneck for this family of four, so the goal was to open things up by removing a large section of the stair wall and modifying an existing office/hallway to create dedicated space for a drop zone. The old home office had dated paneling and built-ins that were removed to create a space that’s more fitting for today’s work from home requirements. The modified layout includes space-saving French pocket doors – the glass allows light to flood into the foyer creating an open and inviting space – a far cry from the formerly dark and cramped entry. The newly refinished hardwoods with updated handrails enables the true charm of this Cape Cod to come shining through.

“It’s almost hard for even us to remember what it was like before the renovation – it’s such a huge transformation! You all did an awesome job working with our goals and transforming the space we already had into something so much more. Thank you!”
