Kitchen Renovation
A top to bottom renovation of a 1939 bungalow in Rosedale Avenue, Bethesda, MD totally transformed a dark and dated house into an open, bright and welcoming home for a growing family relocating from the West Coast in the midst of the pandemic. We focused on opening up the main living areas to improve flow and connectivity between the spaces, a must with three young children underfoot. Soothing shades of green and blue were used throughout the home along with natural wood elements creating a cohesive style that is relaxed, warm and informal – characteristics that were prioritized by our clients.
The previous Rosedale Avenue owner had expanded and partially updated the home, but they left the bungalow’s traditional closed layout intact with clear separation between the kitchen, dining room, and living room. With its large peninsula and assorted built-ins, the old kitchen was cramped and access and circulation were limited. Our clients needed more countertop/prep space and better storage so we reconfigured the layout to incorporate a large, double sided island as well as tall pantry cabinets and plenty of uppers.
Removing the two main walls created open sightlines, better flow and greater flexibility with how the spaces can be used. Reclaimed beams help delineate the rooms visually and the rustic wood adds both texture and warmth. New hardwood in the kitchen were sourced to match the original white oak floors which were refinished with a custom stain to evoke the wood’s natural raw state. We brought color into the space with the ‘blue spruce’ base cabinets and a custom reclaimed wood island top. The Calacatta gold quartz countertops, hexagon backsplash, and white uppers keep the space feeling light and bright. A farmhouse sink was paired with a modern faucet, a nod to the blending of old and new. With their fully renovated bungalow, this family now has a welcoming home that reflects their personal style – relaxed, warm, and timeless.
“We did a full renovation of our kitchen, 3 bathrooms, a gut of our entire basement, and new paint/floor resurfacing throughout. The process was delightful from start to finish and the workmanship and materials were all top-notch. JDBG took over the project management and research while incorporating our style/design ideas. Our house is now incredible and we couldn’t be happier – we’re continuing to work with JDBG for exterior/landscaping work.”
